Randall Edward Plunkett was the son of Edward Plunkett, 14th Baron Dunsany. His mother was Hon. Charlotte Louisa Lawless, who was his father's first wife. He grew up in a family with a long history of nobility in Ireland.

Member of Parliament
In 1835, Randall Plunkett became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area of Drogheda. An MP is a person who is elected to represent a specific area in the government. He was declared the winner after a special review showed that his opponent, Andrew O'Dwyer, was not allowed to serve. Plunkett represented Drogheda as a Conservative politician until 1837.
Becoming a Baron
On 11 December 1848, Randall Plunkett inherited his father's title. This meant he became the 15th Baron of Dunsany. A Baron is a title of nobility, making him a "Lord."
Serving in the House of Lords
