Randy Lee Cutler's Art Projects

Randy Lee Cutler creates art using many different methods. She makes collages, performs, writes texts, and even creates digital e-books and posters. She sometimes uses an artistic name, Hedda Cabbage, for her performances.

Leaning Out of Windows

From 2016 to 2020, Randy Lee Cutler co-led a big project called "Leaning Out of Windows" with Ingrid Koenig. This project aimed to connect art and science. It brought together students and teachers from Emily Carr University with scientists from TRIUMF at the University of British Columbia. They worked together to explore what reality is, using both art and science ideas. The project ended with a book that included essays by Cutler and showed the amazing work of artists like Marina Roy and Mimi Gellman.

Saltwalks

"Saltwalks: Three Movements" was a unique art project where Randy Lee Cutler invited people to interact with her. It involved tasting different kinds of edible salt. These walks helped people understand how salt has influenced our society and culture. Each of the three walks had a special theme:

  • The first walk explored Chinese herbal remedies with an herbalist named Albert Fok.
  • The second walk focused on food preservation and how salt affected food, land, and harvests. Local artist Howie Tsui joined this walk.
  • The final walk looked at the crystal shapes of salt and their connection to healing energy. Participants visited a crystal shop in Chinatown with owner Edward Gutierrez.

Open Wide: An E-book

In 2014, Randy Lee Cutler released an ebook called Open Wide: An Abecedarium for the Great Digestive System. This book uses the idea of digestion as a way to understand experiences. The book follows the alphabet, like a journey through the digestive system. It includes illustrations, media, and sounds created by many artists, including Abbas Akhavan, Geoffrey Farmer, Allison Hrabluik, Germaine Koh, Elizabeth MacKenzie, Liz Magor, Cindy Mochizuki, Marina Roy, and Holly Schmidt.
