Rani Hamid (born 14 July 1944) is a famous chess player from Bangladesh. She made history by becoming her country's first Woman International Master in 1985. She has won the national championship an amazing 20 times! Her most recent win was at the 38th Women National Championship when she was 75 years old.
Rani Hamid also won the British Women's Chess Championship three times. She was the Zonal Champion in 2018. She also received a special "Journalists Choice Award" at the Chess World Cup in Russia that same year. In 2017, she won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Chess event in Delhi.

Early Life and Starting Chess
Rani Hamid was born Sayeda Jasimunnessa Khatun in Sylhet in 1944. She started playing chess when she was 34 years old. This shows it's never too late to pick up a new skill!
Winning National Titles
Rani Hamid quickly became a top player. She won the national title for six years in a row, from 1979 to 1984. This was a huge achievement!
International Recognition
Starting in 1984, Rani Hamid played in all the World Chess Olympiads. She even played three times in the general team, which includes both men and women. In 1985, she earned the special title of Woman International Master (WIM) from FIDE, the world chess organization.
She also showed her skills on the international stage. She won the British Women's Championship in 1983 (sharing the title with Helen Milligan), 1985, and 1989.
Recent Achievements
Rani Hamid continued to win big tournaments. She earned a gold medal at the Commonwealth Chess event in Delhi in 2017. In 2018, she became the Zonal Champion. She also received the "Journalists Choice Award" at the Chess World Cup in Russia.
In September 2019, Rani Hamid won her 20th Bangladesh National Women's title. This is more than any other woman in Bangladesh has won! In September 2024, at 80 years old, she won a match against Springer Leshay of Barbados. This happened during the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary. Bangladesh's women's team won that match with a score of 3.5-0.5.
Family Life
Rani Hamid was married to Lieutenant Colonel MA Hamid. He was a well-known sports organizer. They were married from 1959 until his passing in 2008.
Their family is very sporty! Their son, Kaiser Hamid, was a famous football player. He played for Mohammedan Sporting Club and was the captain of the Bangladesh national football team in the 1980s and 1990s. Another son, Sohel Hamid, was a national squash champion. Their youngest son, Shajahan Hamid Bobby, who passed away in 2022, was a national handball player and also played football. Their daughter is Jabin Hamid.
