Ranko Marinković (born February 22, 1913, died January 28, 2001) was a famous Croatian writer. He wrote novels and plays.
He was born in Komiža, a town on Vis island. His childhood happened during World War I. Later, he studied philosophy at the University of Zagreb. In the 1930s, he became well-known in Zagreb for his stories and plays.
Life and Career
Early Life and Education
Ranko Marinković was born in Komiža. This town is located on the island of Vis. At that time, it was part of Austria-Hungary. His early years were shaped by World War I.
He later went to the University of Zagreb. There, he earned a degree in philosophy. In the 1930s, he started to gain fame. He became known in Zagreb's writing groups. This was thanks to his plays and stories.
World War II and Its Impact
His writing career paused during World War II. His home island was taken over by Italy. He was arrested in Split, a city in Croatia. He was then sent to a camp called Ferramonti.
After Italy surrendered, Marinković went to Bari. This city is in Italy. Later, he moved to the El Shatt refugee camp. There, he met people connected to the Partisans. These were freedom fighters led by Josip Broz Tito. After the war, he worked in theater for some time.
Later Life and Politics
In his final years, Marinković became involved in politics. He supported the views of Franjo Tuđman. He also joined the Croatian Democratic Union. This was a political party.
He passed away in Zagreb, Croatia.

Ranko Marinković wrote several important works. Two of his most famous are a play and a novel.
Glorija (1955)
Glorija is a play he wrote in 1955. In this play, he shared his thoughts on the Catholic Church. It became a well-known piece of his work.
Kiklop (1965)
Kiklop is a novel published in 1965. It is partly based on his own life. The book describes the difficult mood among thinkers in Zagreb. This was before the Axis powers invaded Yugoslavia.
Kiklop was later made into a movie. The film came out in 1982. It was directed by Antun Vrdoljak. In 2010, a newspaper called Jutarnji list did a survey. They asked 41 Croatian experts, writers, and public figures. Kiklop was chosen as the best Croatian novel ever.
