The Ransley Apartment Building is a special old building in Cincinnati, Ohio. It's located in the Walnut Hills neighborhood. This building was constructed in the 1890s. A very important architect from Cincinnati designed it. Today, it is recognized as a historic site, which means it's an important place from the past.

The Ransley Building's History

Who Built It?

In the late 1800s, two businessmen named S.C. and L.A. Ransley lived in Cincinnati. They owned several candy shops around the city. They decided to build a large new building. This building would have many homes inside it. They chose a spot on Kemper Lane for their new project.

The Architect: Samuel Hannaford

The Ransleys picked a famous architect named Samuel Hannaford to design their building. Hannaford was well-known for creating many important buildings in Cincinnati. Some of his most famous designs include City Hall and Music Hall. He was a very respected architect in the region.

What the Building Looks Like

The Ransley Apartment Building is about three and a half stories tall. It is built using two main materials: brick and stone. The first floor is made of smooth, cut stone called ashlar. The floors above that are made of brick.

Special Features

You enter the building through a main doorway that is set back a bit. A large stone archway frames this entrance. You can see the words "The Ransley" and "A.D. 1895" carved near the archway. One of the most interesting parts of the design is a round tower, called a turret. This turret is on the main corner of the building, facing the street intersection.

Architectural Style

The building's style is often called "Victorian". This was a popular style during the time Queen Victoria ruled England. However, many parts of the Ransley Building also show clear "Romanesque Revival" influences. This style often uses round arches and strong, heavy stone.

A Recognized Historic Place

In early 1980, the Ransley Apartment Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. The building was added because of its special and important architecture. It was one of many buildings designed by Samuel Hannaford that were added to the Register at the same time. There were 55 buildings in this group, including four apartment buildings.
