History of Rappahannock Academy
Early Years and Growth
Rappahannock Academy began teaching students in 1813. It was designed to be a military academy, which means students learned about military subjects and discipline. The school grew over the years. By 1860, it was as big as another well-known school in Virginia, the Virginia Military Institute.
What Students Learned
Students at Rappahannock Academy learned many important subjects. A big part of their education was military science. This included learning about military strategies, how to be a good leader, and how to follow rules. Students also had to wear uniforms, which was part of the school's military style.
Notable Teachers
One important person who taught at RA&MI was William Mahone. He taught at the school from January 1848 to July 1849. Teachers like him helped shape the students' education and prepare them for their future.
The Civil War's Impact
The American Civil War (1861 - 1865) was a very difficult time for the United States. This war greatly affected Rappahannock Academy. Most of the students left school to join the war effort. This made it very hard for the school to continue its programs.
The School's End
The historic Mount Church, which was built around 1750, was given to the school by the state of Virginia. Charles A. Lewis was the head of the school two different times. After the Civil War, the school faced many challenges. In 1873, the Rappahannock Academy and all its property were sold. This marked the end of the school's history.
