The area around Ratapiko is part of a larger statistical area called Tarata. This area covers about 259 square kilometres. In 2018, about 570 people lived there.
The population has changed a little over the years. In 2006, there were 606 people, and in 2013, there were 582. This means the number of people living in the area has gone down slightly.

Many young people live in the area. About a quarter of the population is under 15 years old. Most adults are between 30 and 64 years old.
Marae
A very important place in Ratapiko is the Te Upoko o te Whenua Marae. A marae is a special meeting place for Māori communities. It is used for important events, meetings, and celebrations.
The meeting house at this marae is called Ngārongo. It is a significant place for the Ngāti Maru iwi (tribe).
In 2020, the New Zealand Government helped the marae. They gave $500,000 to upgrade it. This project also created 15 jobs for people in the community.
Education
Ratapiko has its own school called Ratapiko School. It is a coeducational school, which means both boys and girls attend. The school teaches students from Year 1 to Year 8.
As of 2024, the school has about 100 students. In 2017, Ratapiko School became an Enviroschool. This means it is part of a program that helps schools become more sustainable. They learn about protecting the environment and living in a way that is good for the planet.
