Ratu Kalinyamat, also known as Ratna Kencana, was a powerful queen who ruled the Kalinyamat Kingdom and Jepara in Java, Indonesia. She ruled from around 1549 to 1579. She is famous for leading strong naval attacks against the Portuguese in Malacca.
Ratu Kalinyamat was the daughter of Sultan Trenggana from the Demak Sultanate. She was married to Sultan Hadlirin. She became queen after her brother, Sunan Prawoto, and her husband passed away due to a conflict.
Her Time as Queen
Queen Kalinyamat took the throne after her husband, the Duke of Jepara, passed away. They did not have children, so she became the next ruler. She was crowned as Kanjeng Ratu Kalinyamat, the queen of Kalinyamat, ruling from Jepara. This happened around the year 1549 AD.
Queen Kalinyamat was known as a very capable and brave leader. Portuguese history books, like "Da Asia" by De Couto, spoke highly of her. They called her "Senhora Rainha de Jepara ponderosa e rica". This means 'the Queen of Jepara', a rich woman with great power. During her rule, she led important sea battles. These included campaigns in 1550 and 1574 against the Portuguese in Malacca.
