Who Lives in Jepara?
The Jepara Regency has about 1.2 million people. Slightly more than half are female. Most people in Jepara are between 15 and 64 years old, which means they are part of the working population.
Most people in Jepara are originally Javanese. Over 98% of the population are Muslim. However, in some villages like Plajan and Tempur, you can find people from different religions living together.
Jepara's Economy
Jepara is well-known for its furniture industry, especially furniture made from teak wood. This trade has brought a lot of wealth to Jepara, making it richer than many other places in Central Java. Because Jepara exports a lot of its furniture, when the value of the Indonesian currency (the rupiah) goes down compared to other currencies like the U.S. dollar, the furniture makers earn more money.
A Look Back: Jepara's History
In the 1500s, Jepara was a very important port city. In 1513, its king, Yunnus (Pati Unus), led an attack against the Portuguese in Malacca. He had many ships and soldiers, but they were defeated. Later, from 1518 to 1521, he ruled over the Demak Kingdom.
Jepara's most powerful time was during the rule of Queen Kalinyamat in the late 1500s. Under her leadership, Jepara attacked Malacca again in 1551, working with Johor, but was defeated. In 1574, Jepara even surrounded Malacca for three months.
In the 1600s, the Dutch built a fort in Jepara. This town is also famous for being the birthplace of Kartini, a national hero of Indonesia.
Life in Modern Jepara
Today, almost everyone in Jepara is Javanese, and over 95% are Muslim. Since Jepara is a "pesisir" (coastal) area, many traders from different parts of the world came here centuries ago. Because of this, some people in Jepara today have ancestors from Europe, China, Arab countries, Malaysia, or Bugis.
Jepara's Weather
Jepara has a tropical monsoon climate. This means it has a wet season and a dry season. From May to October, there is not much rain. But from November to April, it rains a lot.
