Time in Indonesia facts for kids
Indonesia is a very large country, stretching across many islands. Because of its size, the sun rises and sets at different times in different parts of the country. To keep things organized, Indonesia uses three main time zones. These time zones help people know what time it is, whether they are in the west, center, or east of the country.

What Are Time Zones?
A time zone is a region that observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. Time zones are usually set based on how far east or west a place is from a special line called the Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude), which runs through Greenwich, London. The time there is called Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Most countries use a time that is a certain number of hours ahead of or behind UTC.
Indonesia's Time Zones
Indonesia has three official time zones. This helps manage daily life, travel, and communication across its many islands.
Western Indonesia Time (WIB)
Western Indonesia Time (WIB) is the first time zone. It is UTC+07:00, meaning it is seven hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. This zone covers the western parts of Indonesia.
- Main Areas: This includes big islands like Sumatra and Java.
- Major City: The capital city, Jakarta, is in this time zone. Many other important cities are also here.
Central Indonesia Time (WIT)
Central Indonesia Time (WIT) is the second time zone. It is UTC+08:00, which means it is eight hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. This zone covers the central parts of Indonesia.
- Main Areas: This includes islands like Sulawesi, Bali, and parts of Borneo (Kalimantan).
- Difference: If it's 10:00 AM in Jakarta (WIB), it will be 11:00 AM in Bali (WIT).
Eastern Indonesia Time (WITA)
Eastern Indonesia Time (WITA) is the third time zone. It is UTC+09:00, meaning it is nine hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. This zone covers the easternmost parts of Indonesia.
- Main Areas: This includes the province of Papua and the Maluku Islands.
- Difference: If it's 10:00 AM in Jakarta (WIB), it will be 1:00 PM in Papua (WITA).
No Daylight Saving Time
Indonesia does not use daylight saving time. Daylight saving time is when some countries move their clocks forward by an hour during warmer months to make better use of daylight. Then they move them back in the autumn. Indonesia keeps its clocks the same all year round in all three time zones. This makes it simpler for everyone.
