Rautavaara is a small town, or more accurately, a municipality, located in Finland. It's part of the Northern Savonia region. Imagine a place with lots of space but not too many people!
As of 31 December 2023, about 1,424 people live in Rautavaara. The total area of the municipality is 1,235.26 square kilometres (476.94 sq mi). A big part of this area, 84.09 km2 (32.47 sq mi), is covered by water, like lakes and rivers. This means there's plenty of nature to explore!
The population density is quite low, meaning there are only about 1.24 inhabitants per square kilometre (3.2/sq mi) people per square kilometer. This makes Rautavaara a peaceful place. Everyone in the municipality speaks Finnish.
A special place called Tiilikkajärvi National Park is partly located in Rautavaara. It's a beautiful natural area that Rautavaara shares with its neighbor, Sotkamo.
History of Rautavaara
The municipality of Rautavaara was officially started on September 12, 1874. Think of it as the town getting its own official birthday! A bit later, in 1894, the local church community, known as the parish, was also established.
