Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Rawdon Street Methodist Church is a historical Methodist church located in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It was built by African American settlers who came to Sierra Leone. These settlers are often called the 'Nova Scotian Settlers' in Freetown.

The first minister of Rawdon Methodist Church was Joseph Brown. He was helped by George Carrol (also known as Carral) and Isom Gordon. The Nova Scotian Settlers worked hard to build and support this church.

Worship Style

The Nova Scotian Settlers brought their own unique way of worship from the United States. This was different from the style of worship used by the British people who also lived in Sierra Leone. The Nova Scotians' preaching and teaching were deeply connected to their African American culture.

Wealth and Community

Rawdon Methodist Church was mainly for the wealthier Nova Scotian Settlers. Settlers who had less money often went to Baptist churches in Sierra Leone. This meant that Baptist churches were usually linked with Nova Scotians who had lower incomes. On the other hand, Methodist churches, like Rawdon, were connected to the richer Nova Scotian traders and merchants.

Ebenezer Methodist Church

Another church, Ebenezer Methodist Church, was also started by Nova Scotian Settlers. This happened after some disagreements within the Rawdon Street congregation. Ebenezer Methodist Church was also established by wealthy Nova Scotian merchants.
