Raymond-Guilhem de Caupenne facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Raymond-Guilhem de Caupenne (died 1374) was a French noble, which means he was part of an important family. He was known as the Seigneur of Caupenne, a title similar to a lord. Raymond-Guilhem played a part in the Hundred Years War, a long conflict between England and France. He is remembered for leading the defense of the town of Saint-Jean-d'Angély in 1351 when it was under attack by French forces. He passed away in 1374.

Life of Raymond-Guilhem

Raymond-Guilhem was the son of Arnaud de Caupenne and Géraude de Navailles. His father, Arnaud, was also the Seigneur de Caupenne and held an important role as the Senschal of Agenais, which was a type of royal administrator.

At first, Raymond-Guilhem supported the French side in the Hundred Years' War in 1342. However, he later changed his support to the English side. In May 1348, he received several lands and properties from King Edward III of England. This shows how loyalties could shift during the long war.

A key moment in his life was in 1351. He was the commander of the soldiers defending the town of Saint-Jean-d'Angély. A large French army surrounded the town, trying to capture it. This type of attack, where an army tries to take a town by surrounding it and cutting off supplies, is called a siege. Raymond-Guilhem bravely led the defense of the town.

The town eventually surrendered when King John II of France himself arrived at the siege. This showed how important the capture of Saint-Jean-d'Angély was to the French king. Raymond-Guilhem de Caupenne died in 1374.

Family Life

Raymond-Guilhem de Caupenne married Isabeau de Laborde in 1338. They had at least one son together, named Archambaud de Caupenne.
