Raymond Ndong Sima's Political Journey
Ndong Sima was born in Oyem, a city in northern Gabon. He later studied in France. His career in government began in 1986. He worked in the Ministry of Planning and Economy. His job involved managing the country's finances. He also worked with big international groups. These included the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
Early Roles in Government
In 1992, Ndong Sima became the Director-General of the Economy. He kept this important role until 1994. During this time, he continued to manage financial adjustments. After that, he led a state-owned rubber company called Hévégab. He worked there from 1994 to 1998.
In 2009, he was appointed as a government minister. He became the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Rural Development. This role focused on farming and animal care.
Joining the National Assembly
In December 2011, Gabon held a parliamentary election. Ndong Sima was elected to the National Assembly of Gabon. This is like the country's parliament. He represented the area of Kyé in Woleu-Ntem Province. His party, the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), won many seats.
First Time as Prime Minister
The previous Prime Minister, Paul Biyoghe Mba, stepped down in February 2012. President Ali Bongo Ondimba then chose Ndong Sima to be the new prime minister. He started this role on February 27, 2012.
His appointment was a bit unusual. Usually, the prime minister came from a specific region. Ndong Sima was from a different northern province. Even so, he was from the same ethnic group, the Fang people. Before this, he was not a very well-known political figure.
Ndong Sima served as prime minister for almost two years. After local elections in December 2013, President Bongo chose a new prime minister. Daniel Ona Ondo took over from Ndong Sima on January 27, 2014.
Leaving the Ruling Party
In July 2015, Ndong Sima left the PDG party. He felt the party did not welcome new ideas or criticism. He also spoke out about how the government was handling money. The party's leader said Ndong Sima was just looking for opportunities. He insisted the party was democratic.
Presidential Elections and Return to Power
After leaving the party, Ndong Sima ran for president twice. He ran against President Bongo in 2016 and 2023. However, he did not win either election. He received less than 0.5% of the votes each time.
In 2023, there was a change in Gabon's government leadership. After this change, an interim (temporary) president, Brice Oligui Nguema, appointed Ndong Sima again. He became prime minister of a new transition government on September 7, 2023.
