Woleu-Ntem is the northernmost area, or province, in the country of Gabon. It is named after two important rivers that flow through it: the Woleu River and the Ntem River.
This province covers a large area of about 38,465 square kilometers (about 14,851 square miles). The main city and capital of Woleu-Ntem is Oyem. In 2013, about 60,685 people lived in Oyem.
Where is Woleu-Ntem?
Woleu-Ntem is special because it is the only province in Gabon that shares a border with Cameroon. It also borders two other countries: the Republic of the Congo and Equatorial Guinea.
Here are the areas it borders in other countries:
- Sangha Department in the Republic of the Congo, to the east.
- South Province in Cameroon, to the north.
- Kié-Ntem Province in Equatorial Guinea, to the northwest.
- Wele-Nzas Province in Equatorial Guinea, also to the northwest.
- Centro Sur Province in Equatorial Guinea, to the northwest.
Inside Gabon, Woleu-Ntem borders these provinces:
- Estuaire to the southwest.
- Moyen-Ogooué to the south.
- Ogooué-Ivindo to the southeast.
Departments of Woleu-Ntem
Woleu-Ntem is divided into five smaller areas called departments. Each department has its own main town:
- Haut-Komo (department) (its capital is Médouneu)
- Haut-Ntem (department) (its capital is Minvoul)
- Ntem (department) (its capital is Bitam)
- Okano (department) (its capital is Mitzic)
- Woleu (department) (its capital is Oyem)
