Moyen-Ogooué is one of the nine provinces in the country of Gabon. A province is like a large region or state within a country. This province covers an area of about 18,535 square kilometers. The main city and capital of Moyen-Ogooué is Lambaréné. In 2013, about 69,287 people lived there.
Where is Moyen-Ogooué?
Moyen-Ogooué is special because, unlike other provinces in Gabon, it does not have a coastline or a border with another country. It is located right in the middle of Gabon.
It shares borders with many other provinces:
- Estuaire Province is to its northwest.
- Woleu-Ntem Province is to its north-northeast.
- Ogooué-Ivindo Province is to its east.
- Ogooué-Lolo Province is to its southeast.
- Ngounié Province is to its south.
- Ogooué-Maritime Province is to its west-southwest.
Moyen-Ogooué borders more provinces than any other province in Gabon. It touches all but two of them!
How is Moyen-Ogooué Organized?
For easier management, Moyen-Ogooué is divided into two smaller areas called departments. Each department has its own main town or capital.
The two departments are:
- Abanga-Bigne Department – Its capital city is Ndjolé.
- Ogooué et des Lacs Department – Its capital city is Lambaréné, which is also the capital of the whole province.
