Elbio Raúl Lozza (born October 27, 1911 – died January 27, 2008) was a talented artist from Argentina. He was a painter, designer, and writer. Raúl Lozza was an important part of the concrete art movement. This art style uses simple shapes and colors. It focuses on the artwork itself, not on showing real-life objects. He also helped start the Perceptivist group. In 1992, he won the Platinum Konex Award for Visual Arts in Argentina. This award celebrates top artists.

Early Life and Family

Raúl Lozza was born in Alberti, a town in the Buenos Aires Province of Argentina. His father, Rafael Carlos Lozza, was also an artist. He worked as a designer, painter, and musician. Raúl's mother was Emma Lozza. Her parents had moved to Argentina from Italy. Raúl had two brothers, Rafael and Rembrandt.

His family faced tough times when a tornado destroyed buildings his father was working on. Later, his mother became very ill. She had to go to a hospital in 1920. She later escaped and was never found. Raúl and his brothers then lived with their aunt and uncle. They helped out on the family farm.

In 1925, Raúl left school. He worked on the farm during harvest season. He also worked as a muleteer and a bricklayer. Later, he and his brothers started a business. They worked as painters and paper-cutters. This helped them earn a steady income.

Becoming an Artist

In 1929, Raúl and his brothers moved to Buenos Aires. They hoped to get money to study painting in Italy. But a big political change happened in 1930. This was called the 1930 Argentine coup d'état. It made their plans impossible. During this time, they studied theatre. They even put on a play in Alberti in 1930.

By 1932, Raúl Lozza was showing his paintings in different places. He also started writing. He published an article about a famous writer named Goethe. He also wrote poems and a play.

In 1933, Lozza was briefly jailed. This was because he protested for political prisoners. While in jail, he met other important artists. He became friends with Lino Enea Spilimbergo and Miguel Carlos Victorica. He also met the González Tuñón brothers. Raúl Lozza continued to be active in politics. He drew pictures and wrote for anti-fascist newspapers.

In 1937, Lozza got sick with tuberculosis. But he kept working hard. He worked as a painter and also in advertising. He even started his own lingerie business. He designed clothes for famous women, like Delia Garcés.

Personal Life

In 1938, Raúl Lozza got married for the first time. He had a son named Arturo Lozza. After his first marriage ended, he met Antonia Belizán in 1947. She was also a painter. They later married and had a son, Carlos Raúl Lozza.

Later Years

Raúl Lozza passed away on January 27, 2008. He was 96 years old. He died of natural causes in La Paternal, a neighborhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is buried at Cementerio de la Chacarita.
