Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Rector was once a small town in the northwest part of Shannon County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. Today, it's considered a "ghost town" because no one lives there anymore. It's located in a place called Rector Hollow, which is a small valley with a stream that flows into Gladden Creek, about one mile to the west. You can find where Rector used to be by looking for Missouri Route J, about two miles west of Missouri Route 19.

What Was Rector?

Rector was a community that grew up around a few families. It was named after the local Rector family, who were important in the area.

When Did Rector Have a Post Office?

A post office was opened in Rector in 1894. This was a big deal because it meant people could send and receive mail more easily. The post office stayed open for many years, helping the community connect with the outside world. However, it eventually closed down in 1954. After the post office closed, fewer people lived in Rector, and it slowly became an empty place.
