Shannon County is a county located in the southern part of Missouri, a state in the United States. In 2020, about 7,031 people lived here. The main town and county seat is Eminence.
Shannon County was officially created on January 29, 1841. It was named after George F. "Peg-Leg" Shannon, who was an important member of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. It is the second-largest county in Missouri based on its total area.
Interesting fact: Missouri's very first copper mine opened in Shannon County in 1846. Also, the state's only manganese mine was located here and was used during World War II. Historically, around the year 2000, Shannon County was noted for having some of the lowest average incomes in Missouri.

History
A very powerful storm, the Great Tri-State Tornado, started near Shannon County on March 18, 1925. This tornado was part of a larger storm system. It went on to cause a lot of damage and affected many people across Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana.

Shannon County covers a total area of about 1,004 square miles. Almost all of this area is land, with only a tiny bit being water.
