A post office called Summersville has been in operation since 1871. The community has the name of Jesse and Thomas Summer, pioneer citizens.

The racial makeup of the city was 96.8% White, 0.8% Native American, 0.2% Asian, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4% of the population.
