Low Wassie, Missouri facts for kids
Low Wassie is a small place in the eastern part of Shannon County, in the southern part of Missouri. It's what we call an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and people, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.
Low Wassie is located in the beautiful Ozarks region, which is known for its hills and forests. You can find this community where two creeks, Pike Creek and Sycamore Creek, meet. It's also near Missouri Route W, about a mile north of the bigger U.S. Route 60.
History
The community of Low Wassie once had its own post office. This post office first opened in 1891. It served the people living there for many years before it finally closed down in 1943.
The name "Low Wassie" is quite unique! It comes from a special type of natural area that was near where the community first started. This area was a sinkhole wetland. A sinkhole is a dip or hole in the ground that forms when the surface layer collapses, often because of water dissolving rock underneath. A wetland is an area of land that is covered by water, like a swamp or marsh. In the local language of the area, a sinkhole wetland was called a "wassie." So, "Low Wassie" likely meant a low-lying wetland area formed by a sinkhole.
