Winona is a city located in the southeast part of Shannon County, Missouri, in the United States. In 2020, about 950 people lived there.

History of Winona

The town of Winona got its name from Winona, Minnesota. A lumberman who lived in the area was originally from Winona, Minnesota. The name "Winona" also comes from a Sioux word that means 'first-born'. A post office has been open in Winona since 1888, helping people send and receive mail.

Geography of Winona

Winona is found in the Ozarks, a beautiful highland area in southern Missouri. The city is located where two important roads meet: US Route 60 and Missouri Route 19.

Winona is also inside the Mark Twain National Forest. This means it's surrounded by lots of trees and nature. Nearby towns include Birch Tree, which is about eight miles to the west. Eminence is about eight miles north on Route 19. To the east, Van Buren is about 18 miles away in Carter County.

The city covers a total area of about 3.81 square miles (9.86 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
