Mervin John "Red" Ryan was a talented American baseball pitcher. He was born on July 11, 1897, and passed away on August 16, 1969. Red Ryan played in the Negro leagues from 1915 to 1932. He played for many different teams, but he spent most of his time with the Hilldale Club.

Red Ryan's Baseball Journey
Red Ryan started his professional baseball career in 1915. His first team was the Pittsburgh Colored Stars of Buffalo. He then played for the Lincoln Stars in 1916 and the Brooklyn Royal Giants in 1919.
Playing for the Giants
In 1920, Red Ryan joined the Bacharach Giants. This team played against other independent Black teams that summer. They also played in the Cuban League during the winter. Ryan also pitched for the Pittsburgh Colored Stars again in September 1920. He continued to play for the Bacharach Giants in 1921. In 1922, he played for the Harrisburg Giants.
Joining the Hilldale Club
In 1923, Ryan joined the Hilldale Club. This team was part of the Eastern Colored League. He played with Hilldale for parts of eight seasons.
Red Ryan pitched in the 1924 Colored World Series. His team, the Hilldale Club, played against the Kansas City Monarchs. Hilldale lost that series. The next year, in the 1925 Colored World Series, Ryan pitched in relief. This time, Hilldale beat the Monarchs and won the championship!
Moving Between Teams
After his time with Hilldale, Ryan played for a few other teams. He briefly played for the independent Homestead Grays in 1927. In early 1928, he joined the Lincoln Giants. However, he was soon traded back to Hilldale. Later in 1929, he was traded to the Baltimore Black Sox.
In 1930, Red Ryan played only for the Lincoln Giants. In 1931, he pitched for the Harlem Stars before returning to Hilldale later that year. Ryan was released by Hilldale in early 1932. He played his final season with the Newark Browns in the East-West League.
