Playing Ball in 1932
The Newark Browns were the very last team to join the East-West League in March 1932. This league was an important part of the Negro leagues, where many talented African American baseball players competed. The team was managed by a person named John Beckwith.
Meet the Players
On April 13, 1932, the team announced its players. Some of the outfielders included Paul Arnold, Willie Gray, and Oscar Johnson. The infielders were Earl Davis, Frank McCoy, and Jasper Washington. On the pitching mound, the team had Chet Brewer, Percy Miller, and Nip Winters.
However, early in the season, some players left the team. Two pitchers and an infielder named Dick Seay moved to other clubs in the same league.
A Short Season
The Browns played their first league game against the Baltimore Black Sox on May 28. But their time in the East-West League was very short. They even canceled a game on June 9 against the Hilldale Club. After playing only a few games in the league, the team decided to leave. They chose to continue playing baseball as an independent club instead.
