Clarkia concinna is a beautiful wild plant. It is often called red ribbons. This name comes from its unique flowers. They look like fancy silk ribbons!
What are Red Ribbons?
Red ribbons are a special kind of wildflower. They grow only in California, USA. This means they are endemic to California. You can find them in the lower mountains of the northern part of the state. This plant grows every year. It has straight, green stems.
What Do Red Ribbons Look Like?
The flowers of the red ribbons plant are very special. They have four looping parts called sepals. These sepals are red or dark pink. They truly look like loops of silk ribbon. The petals are longer and pink. Each petal has three parts, or lobes. These lobes often have white streaks on them.
Different Kinds of Red Ribbons
Even within the red ribbons family, there are a few different types. These are called subspecies. They are slightly different versions of the same plant.
- C. c. automixa - This one is known as Santa Clara red ribbons.
- C. c. concinna - This is the most common type, simply called red ribbons.
- C. c. raichei - This type is called Raiche's red ribbons.
