Growing Up: Redd Pepper's Early Life
Redd Pepper was born Richardson Green in Barbados in 1961. He moved to London, England, when he was a child. He has a big family with six sisters and three brothers. He went to Sedgehill School in London.
His first job was at a McDonald's restaurant. After that, he worked as a firefighter for six months. Then, he became a train driver on the London Underground, which is London's subway system. He once said he got bored easily as a train driver. He would sometimes play pranks on passengers. He would stop the train between stations, turn off the lights, and talk over the loudspeakers in a spooky voice. He would say things like, "This is your driver speaking... or is it?"
How Redd Pepper Started His Voice Acting Career
In 1996, something amazing happened. A TV boss was riding on a London Underground train that Pepper was driving. The boss heard Pepper's deep voice over the loudspeakers. He was so impressed that he gave Pepper his business card. He asked Pepper to call him.
This led to many jobs for Pepper. He started doing voiceovers for TV channels and advertisements. Soon after, he began voicing movie trailers. His first movie trailer was for the film Space Jam. He also voiced a character named Mike LeRoi/Shadow Man in the video game Shadow Man.
Redd Pepper became very well-known when people thought he was Don LaFontaine. This happened after he voiced the trailers for big movies like Armageddon and Independence Day. He has also acted on stage. He was in a play called Jeffrey Archer's Prison Diaries at the Edinburgh Festival.
On December 24, 2010, he was on a special celebrity episode of the BBC quiz show Eggheads. Someone asked him if he missed being a train driver. He replied, "I make £3,000 to £4,000 per movie trailer. What do you think?" This shows how successful he became!
In October 2015, Redd Pepper briefly replaced Peter Dickson as the voiceover for the British reality show The X Factor. He was the announcer during the "Judges' Houses" part of the show. Peter Dickson returned later that month. In April 2017, Pepper was the announcer for Bradley Walsh's week of hosting The Nightly Show.
