Early Life and First Jobs
Redd Pepper, whose real name is Richardson Green, was born in Barbados in 1961. When he was a child, his family moved to London, England. He grew up with six sisters and three brothers. He went to Sedgehill School in the Lewisham area of London.
His first job was at a McDonald's restaurant. After that, he worked as a firefighter for six months. Then, he became a train driver on the London Underground, which is London's subway system. He found this job a bit boring sometimes. To make it more interesting, he would play pranks on passengers. He would stop the train between stations, turn off the lights, and speak over the loudspeakers in a spooky voice. He once said, "This is your driver speaking... or is it?"
How Redd Pepper Started His Voice Acting Career
In 1996, something amazing happened. A TV executive was riding on a London Underground train that Redd Pepper was driving. The executive heard Pepper's unique voice over the loudspeakers. He was so impressed that he gave Pepper his business card and asked him to call.
This phone call led to many new opportunities for Redd Pepper. He started doing voiceovers for TV channels and commercials. Soon after, he began narrating movie trailers. His very first movie trailer was for the film Space Jam. He also lent his voice to the main character, Mike LeRoi, in the video game Shadow Man and its sequel, Shadow Man: 2econd Coming.
Becoming a Famous Voice Actor
Redd Pepper became even more famous when people started confusing his voice with that of Hollywood voice artist Don LaFontaine. This happened after Pepper voiced the trailers for big movies like Armageddon and Independence Day.
Besides voice acting, Redd Pepper has also performed on stage as an actor. He appeared in a play called Jeffrey Archer's Prison Diaries at the Edinburgh Festival. On Christmas Eve in 2010, he was a guest on a special celebrity episode of the BBC quiz show Eggheads. When someone asked if he missed being a train driver, he joked, "I make £3,000 to £4,000 per movie trailer. What do you think?" This shows how successful he became in his new career.
In October 2015, Redd Pepper briefly took over as the announcer for the British reality show The X Factor. He was only the voiceover during the "Judges' Houses" part of the show. The original announcer returned later that month. In April 2017, he was the announcer for a week on The Nightly Show when Bradley Walsh was hosting.
