Redmond John Barry (born September 14, 1866 – died July 11, 1913) was an important Irish lawyer and judge. He became the Lord Chancellor of Ireland, which was a very high position in the legal system. Sadly, his promising career ended early when he passed away at age 46.

Who Was Redmond Barry?

Redmond John Barry was born in Cork, Ireland, on September 14, 1866. He was the third son of Patrick Barry. He went to the Royal University of Ireland to study. After finishing his studies, he became a lawyer in 1888. By 1899, he was made a Queen's Counsel, which meant he was a very experienced and respected lawyer.

A Rising Star in Law

Redmond Barry was known for his skills and friendly personality. He was not related to the famous politician John Redmond, but people often thought he was. He even joked that this idea helped his career! In 1895, he married Ethel Pyke from Southport.

In 1905, Redmond Barry joined the Liberal government. He was first appointed as the Solicitor-General for Ireland. This role meant he was one of the main legal advisors to the government.

Becoming a Top Judge

In 1907, Redmond Barry was elected as a Member of Parliament for North Tyrone. This meant he represented that area in the British Parliament.

He continued to rise in his legal career. In 1909, he became the Attorney-General for Ireland. This was an even more important legal role, making him the chief legal officer for the Irish government.

His hard work and skill led him to the highest legal position in Ireland. In 1911, he was made the Lord Chancellor of Ireland. He held this very important job until he passed away in 1913 at the age of 46.

His Legacy

Many people remembered Redmond Barry fondly. A writer named Maurice Healy wrote about him in his book The Old Munster Circuit. Healy said that Barry was a very talented and cultured lawyer. He believed Barry left behind more kind memories than almost anyone else in the Irish legal world.

Redmond Barry's son, Sir Patrick Barry, also followed in his footsteps. He became a High Court judge in England.
