Reeves, Georgia facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Reeves (once known as Reeves Station) is a small, unincorporated community located in Gordon County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's usually managed by the county government.

History of Reeves

The area now known as Reeves has a simple but interesting history. It started out as a place called Reeves Station.

The First Post Office

A post office is a place where you can send and receive letters and packages. It was very important for communities, especially before the internet and phones. People relied on post offices to communicate with others far away.

The first post office in this community was opened in 1870. It was named Reeves Station. This name likely came from its connection to a train station, as "station" often referred to a stop along a railway line.

Renaming and Closure

In 1903, the name of the post office was changed from Reeves Station to just Reeves. This simpler name stuck for the community.

The community was named after a person called Osborn Reeves. He was the original owner of the land where the community grew. It was common for places to be named after important landowners or founders in those times.

The Reeves post office continued to serve the community for many years. However, as times changed and new ways of communication became popular, many smaller post offices closed down. The Reeves post office closed its doors in 1954. Even though the post office is gone, the community still exists and is known as Reeves.
