Olympic Success
Rhythmic gymnastics became an official Olympic sport in 1984. Many top athletes from the USSR and Bulgaria were expected to win. However, some countries decided not to attend the 1984 Summer Olympics. This was known as the Eastern-led Boycott.
Because of this, many strong competitors were not there. Regina Weber then had a great chance to show her skills. She went on to win the bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Doina Stăiculescu from Romania won the silver medal.
Between 1981 and 1986, Regina won almost all the national titles. These were for various rhythmic gymnastics events in West Germany.
