Reginald Grey, 5th Earl of Kent facts for kids
Reginald Grey, 5th Earl of Kent (born before 1541 – 17 March 1573) was an important English nobleman. He lived in the 1500s and became an Earl thanks to Queen Elizabeth I.
Who Was Reginald Grey?
Reginald Grey was the son of Henry Grey (who lived from 1520 to 1545) and Margaret St John. His grandfather was Henry Grey, 4th Earl of Kent. Reginald went to St John's College, Cambridge, which is a famous university.
The Earl of Kent Title
For about 50 years, the title "Earl of Kent" was not actively used. Reginald's great-uncle, Richard Grey, 3rd Earl of Kent, had lost most of his family's land because of money problems. This meant that even though Reginald's family had a claim to the title, they didn't have much wealth or land connected to it. They lived more like regular citizens.
Queen Elizabeth I's Help
In 1572, Elizabeth I became Queen. She decided to give Reginald Grey his family's title back. She also returned some of the family's land. This made him the 5th Earl of Kent.
Family Life
Reginald Grey was married to Susan Bertie. She was the daughter of Catherine Willoughby, 12th Baroness Willoughby de Eresby. Reginald and Susan did not have any children together. After Reginald passed away, his younger brothers, Henry and Charles, became the next Earls of Kent.
