Richard Grey, 3rd Earl of Kent (1481 – 3 May 1524) was an important English nobleman. He held the title of Earl of Kent and was also a Knight of the Garter, which was a very special honor.

Richard Grey's Family Background
Richard Grey was the son of George Grey, 2nd Earl of Kent. His mother was Anne Woodville.
Richard had a half-brother named Henry Grey, 4th Earl of Kent. Henry later became the next Earl of Kent after Richard.
Richard Grey's Marriages
Richard Grey was married two times during his life. His first wife was Elizabeth Hussey. Her father, Sir William Hussey, was a very important judge in England. He served as the top judge, called the Lord Chief Justice.
Richard's second wife was Margaret Fynche. Richard Grey did not have any children from either of his marriages.
Life as an Earl
Richard Grey had many important jobs and roles.
Early Public Service
Starting in 1504, Richard worked as a Justice of the Peace in several areas. These included Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Huntingdonshire. A Justice of the Peace helped keep law and order in their local area.
Knight of the Garter
In 1505, Richard received a very high honor. He was made a Knight of the Garter. This is one of the oldest and most respected honors in England. It is given by the King or Queen.
Military and Royal Duties
Richard was also involved in military leadership. He served as a Captain of the Army in France in both 1513 and 1514.
In 1520, Richard went with King Henry VIII to a famous meeting. This meeting was with Francis I of France, the King of France. It was called the Field of the Cloth of Gold. It was a grand event where the two kings met to show off their wealth and power.
Financial Challenges
Later in his life, Richard faced some money problems. He had to sell a lot of his land and property. Some of his land was even sold directly to King Henry VII.
Richard Grey's Death and Legacy
Richard Grey passed away on May 3, 1524. Since he did not have any children, his half-brother Henry became the next Earl of Kent.
Henry tried to get back the land that Richard had sold. However, he was not very successful. Because of this, Henry lived a more modest life and did not formally use the title of Earl for some time.
