What is the Registry Building?
The Registry Building is a historic place. It is looked after by an organization called Heritage New Zealand. They gave it a "Category I" rating. This means it is one of the most important historic places in New Zealand. It is valued for its history and special design.
Building Design and History
The Registry Building was designed by a team called Collins and Harman. They were famous architects. The building was finished in 1916. Ten years later, in 1926, more parts were added to it. This made the building even bigger.
The Christchurch Earthquakes
In 2011, a big earthquake hit Christchurch. Many buildings were damaged. The Registry Building was one of 22 historic buildings that were "red stickered." This meant they were unsafe. No one was allowed to go inside them.
Restoring a Landmark
Even though it was badly damaged, the Registry Building was the first one to be fixed. Workers carefully repaired it. It reopened in July 2013. This was a big step in bringing the Arts Centre back to life.
