The Reibold Building is a historic building located in Dayton, Ohio. For a while, it was the tallest building in the area! It was named after its developer, Louis Napoleon Reibold, and has been home to a department store and many offices over the years.
A Look at the Reibold Building
The Reibold Building was finished in 1896. At that time, it was the tallest building in Dayton. It held this title until 1904, when another part of the Centre City Building was completed.
How the Building Grew
The Reibold Building wasn't built all at once. It was constructed in three main parts:
- The middle section was built first, in 1896.
- A south addition was completed in 1904.
- A north addition was finished in 1914.
The building was designed by the Peters Burns and Pretzinger firm and a local architect from Dayton, Charles Insco Williams.
Special Escalators
In 1934, the Otis Elevator Company installed four escalators in the Reibold Building. These were the very first escalators ever seen in Dayton! What's even more amazing is that these escalators are still working today. They are some of the oldest working escalators from that time period, along with a few others found in Connecticut and at the Smithsonian Museum.
Modern Updates
The Reibold Building got a big makeover and a new addition in 2002. This included an 11-level parking garage. This project helped bring the historic building up to modern standards while keeping its classic look.
