Reichert, Oklahoma facts for kids
Reichert is the name for two small places in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, United States. These two spots are about half a mile apart and are part of an unincorporated community. This means they don't have their own local government like a city or town does.
The Story of Reichert's Name
The area we know as Reichert today actually started with a different name: Kolb. A post office was first opened there on February 5, 1892. It was named Kolb after its very first postmaster, a person named Philip Kolb. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office.
Just a few months later, on May 7, 1892, the name of the post office was changed to Reichert. This new name honored William Reichert, who became the first postmaster under the new name. The Reichert post office stayed open for many years but eventually closed on February 15, 1927.
At the time Kolb (and later Reichert) was founded, this area was part of what was called Indian Territory. This was land set aside for Native American tribes before Oklahoma became a state. Specifically, Reichert was located in Sugar Loaf County, which was part of the Apukshunnubbee District of the Choctaw Nation. The Choctaw Nation is a self-governing Native American tribe.
William Reichert, who the town was named after, was an immigrant from Germany. He owned and ran a store in the community.
