Reiki (era) facts for kids
Reiki (霊亀) was a special name for a period of time in Japanese history. These time periods are called Japanese era names (年号,, nengō,, meaning "year name"). The Reiki era came after the Wadō era and before the Yōrō era.
This era lasted for a short time, from September 715 to November 717. During this period, the ruler of Japan was Empress Genshō (元正天皇).

Empress Genshō Takes the Throne
In the year 715 (which was the first year of the Reiki era), something important happened. The empress before Genshō, Empress Gemmei, decided to step down from her role. This is called abdicating.
After Empress Gemmei stepped down, her daughter, Genshō, took over as the new ruler. This process of taking over the throne is called senso. Soon after, Empress Genshō's new role as empress was made official with special ceremonies called sokui.
