Rekwoi was once a busy village of the Yurok people. It was located in Del Norte County, California. The village was about 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) upstream from a place called Requa. Rekwoi sat very close to the water, at an elevation of only 3 meters (10 feet).

Life in Rekwoi Village

Rekwoi was an important home for the Yurok people. When it was fully active, the village had around 25 houses. It also had about 15 special buildings called sweathouses. These sweathouses were used for important ceremonies and for cleansing.

How Many People Lived There?

In the year 1852, records show that 116 people lived in Rekwoi. This tells us it was a good-sized community. The Yurok people lived along the Klamath River for many generations. They had a rich culture and strong traditions.

Changes for the Yurok People

Life for the Yurok people changed a lot over time. After conflicts known as the Klamath River Wars, many Yurok people were forced to leave their homes. Some of the remaining Yurok people were moved to the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation. This marked the end of Rekwoi as an active village.
