Rely Zlatarovic facts for kids
Rely Zlatarovic was a smart woman scientist who worked as a meteorologist (someone who studies weather and the atmosphere). Around 1920, she measured how much radon gas was in the air outside in Innsbruck, Austria.
Her Important Work
In 1920, Rely Zlatarovic developed a new way to measure radon gas in air samples. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the ground. It's important to measure it because high levels can be harmful.
She created her special method at the Physical Institute of the University of Innsbruck. Her research showed that precipitation (like rain or snow) actually lowered the amount of radon in the air.
Zlatarovic used a mix of charcoal and petroleum to soak up the gas. She also used a special tool called an ionization vessel. She found that when radon was present, it made the air more electrically charged. The only thing that seemed to change the radon levels was rainy weather. When it rained, the amount of radon in the air went down. She shared her discoveries in a science publication called Chemical Abstracts.
