René de Obaldia (born October 22, 1918 – died January 27, 2022) was a famous French writer. He was known for writing plays and poems. He became a member of the Académie française on June 24, 1999. The Académie française is a very important group in France that protects the French language.
René de Obaldia started his writing career in 1960. His first big play was called "Génousie." It was shown at a famous theater in France, the Théâtre national populaire.
A Popular Playwright
After "Génousie," René de Obaldia wrote another important play. It was called Le Satyre de la Villette. This play was a comedy. It helped him become known as a writer like Jacques Audiberti, Ionesco, and Beckett. These were all very famous playwrights.
For over 50 years, René de Obaldia was one of the most-produced French playwrights. This means his plays were performed very often. He was also famous all around the world. His works were translated into 28 different languages.
Awards and Recognition
In 1985, René de Obaldia received a special award. It was called the Grand Prix du Théâtre de l’Académie Française. This award is given by the Académie française to honor great theater writers.
