Irene "Rena" Vlahopoulou (born July 28, 1923 – died July 29, 2004) was a famous Greek actress and singer. She was known for her roles in plays, musicals, and Greek movies. Some of her popular works include The Gambler and The Countess of Corfu.

Biography

Early Life and Career

Rena Vlahopoulou was born on July 28, 1923, on the beautiful island of Corfu, Greece. She was the fifth of nine children in her family. Rena started learning to play the piano from her father, Giannis Vlahopoulos, at a young age.

When she was just ten years old, Rena began singing at a local bakery. She quickly showed that she was a talented dancer and actress. She also had a strong singing voice, known as a mezzo-soprano.

Rena had a very long career, lasting 55 years! During this time, she performed in 105 different plays between 1939 and 1994. She also starred in 26 films from 1951 to 1985.

In 1939, Rena moved to Athens and married Kostas Vasiliou, a football player. She began singing at a popular show called Oasis. Later, she sang at the World Theatre in Athens.

Later Life and Legacy

Rena Vlahopoulou was married three times. Her last marriage was to Giorgos Lafazanis, an entrepreneur, in 1967. They stayed together until she passed away in 2004. Rena did not have any children.

She continued to star in films for many years. In 1992–93, she performed in a musical comedy called Gia Tin Ellada Re Gamo To. After this show, she decided to retire from performing.

Rena Vlahopoulou passed away on July 29, 2004, at the age of 81. She was honored with a public burial at the First Cemetery of Athens. Many of her friends, colleagues, and fans attended her funeral.

The band from the Philharmonic Society "Mantzaros" came all the way from Corfu to play at her burial. As a sign of respect, all the shops in her hometown of Corfu closed on the day of her funeral. Corfu also honored her by renaming the old "Mon Repo" theatre to the "Rena Vlahopoulou" theatre.
