Renata Litvinova is a famous Russian actress, film director, and screenwriter. She was born on January 12, 1967, in Moscow, which was then part of the Soviet Union.

Her Early Life and Education

Renata was born in Moscow. Her father, Murat, was from the Volga Tatar group, and her mother, Alisa, was Russian. Both of her parents were doctors. They divorced when Renata was just one year old.

After finishing school, Renata went to a special film school called VGIK in 1984. She finished her studies there in 1989. She studied with other future filmmakers like Roman Kachanov and Arkady Vysotsky. While at VGIK, she wrote her first film script for a movie called The Much Loved Rita. The Last Meeting with Her (1988).

Her Career in Film and Theatre

Becoming a Screenwriter

Renata started her film journey as a screenwriter, writing movies from 1988 to 1998. Some of her early scripts, like Truck Drivers 2 (1992), didn't become very famous.

A well-known director named Kira Muratova discovered Renata in 1994. Muratova had read Renata's special project from film school. They met at a film festival, and Muratova decided she wanted Renata to act in one of her films.

Renata tried out for the main female role, Violet, but it wasn't the right fit. However, Muratova still wanted her in the movie. So, Renata wrote a new role for herself as a nurse in the film.

She kept writing scripts after this acting experience. These included Male Revelations (1995) and Principled and Compassionate View (1995). The second film won an award at the "Window to Europe" Film Festival and was shown at other festivals around the world.

Renata worked with director Muratova again in 1997 and 1998. She wrote two more screenplays that Muratova directed. Renata's script Three Stories became a film in 1997, and Renata also acted in it as a character named Opha. Her story To Own and Belong was made into the popular crime film Country of the Deaf in 1998.

In 2017, Renata made her first big step into theatre with her own play called "The North Wind" at the Moscow Art Theatre. She was the director and writer, and she also played the main role.

Becoming an Actress

By 2022, Renata Litvinova became one of the top Russian actresses in both TV and theatre. In 2000, she became very popular for her role as Albino Crow in the TV series The Border. After this, she wrote fewer screenplays and usually starred in the films she wrote.

Renata became very well-known in the mid-2000s. She was nominated for awards for her roles in Sky. Plane. Girl. (2002), The Tuner (2004), and I'm Not Hurt (2006). On stage at the Moscow Chekhov Art Theatre, Renata played Lyubov Ranevskaya in "The Cherry Orchard." She also acted in plays by Marguerite Duras and Agatha Christie.

Becoming a Director

Renata Litvinova has directed many different types of films. She first directed a documentary film in 2000 called There is No Death For Me. This film looked at the lives of Renata's favorite Soviet-era actresses and shared her thoughts on their stories.

Just like with her screenwriting, she directed films sometimes between her acting jobs. She has directed six films since 2000. Her first full-length movie as a director was The Goddess in 2004, which she also wrote and starred in. In 2006, she directed her first short film, Rado.

Renata also directed concert films. In 2008, she directed Green Theatre in Zemfira. This film used footage from a concert by her friend, the musician Zemfira Ramazanova. The film won "music film of the year" at an independent music award show. They worked together again in 2010 on another concert film called Moscow. Crokus/Arrow. Later, Zemfira wrote the music for Renata's second full-length movie, Rita's Last FairyTale (2012). This film explores big ideas about love and searching for it.

Over the years, Renata Litvinova has directed more than 15 music videos for Russian musicians and singers. Since 2005, she has mostly worked with Zemfira on these videos. In 2021, she directed a short promotional film for the fashion brand Gucci.

Voice Acting Roles

Renata has also lent her voice to films. In 1999, she provided a voiceover for the character Xenia in the film $8.50. Her voice was also heard in other movies in the 2000s, such as Frog's Paradise (2007) and Peregrine (2008).

Fashion and Television Work

On TV, Renata Litvinova hosted several shows about style, the history of fashion, and movies. She has also become known as a designer and a fashion icon herself. She is a friend and collaborator of Demna Gvasalia and worked on Gosha Rubchinskiy's film, 'The Day of My Death'.

Personal Life

Renata's first marriage was to producer Alexander Antipov, from 1996 to 1997. She then married businessman Leonid Dobrovsky, and they had a daughter named Ulyana. They divorced in 2007.

In February 2022, Renata spoke out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. She then left Russia and decided to live in Paris with her partner Zemfira.
