Rennell Islands facts for kids
This page is about the islands in southern Chile. For the island in the Solomon Islands, see Rennell Island.
The Rennell Islands (called Islas Rennell in Spanish) are two islands located in southern Chile. They are part of the Queen Adelaide Archipelago in the Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena Region. These islands are known for their unique geography.
Island Sizes
The Rennell Islands are made up of two main parts:
- South Rennell Island is the larger of the two. It covers an area of about 340 square kilometers (about 131 square miles).
- North Rennell Island is slightly smaller. It has an area of about 303 square kilometers (about 117 square miles).
Are They Connected?
Even though they are called "two islands," satellite images show something interesting! There is a very narrow strip of land, only about 30 meters (about 98 feet) wide, that connects North Rennell Island and South Rennell Island. This means they are actually joined together.
