The History of Research
Research was first settled in the 1850s. By the 1860s, it was known for its many fruit orchards.
How Research Got Its Name
The suburb has a very interesting name! It comes from the time of the gold rush in Victoria during the mid-1800s. At first, this area was called Swiper's Gully. But then, gold was found after the area was "re-searched" by miners. Because of this, Swiper's Gully became Research Gully. Later, in the late 1800s, the name was shortened to just Research. The Research Post Office opened its doors on 20 October 1902.
Community Life in Research
Today, much of Research has large blocks of land, usually between 1 and 35 acres.
Nature and Bushfire Safety
This area has a high risk of bushfires. This is because there are many Eucalyptus and Melaleuca Paperbark trees. However, these trees also mean that a wide variety of fauna (animals) and flora (plants) live here. This makes it an important protected natural zone.
