Reservation Blues is a novel written in 1995 by Sherman Alexie. He is an American writer and a member of the Spokane and Coeur d'Alene tribes. This book tells an exciting story about a group of friends and their journey with music.

The Story of Coyote Springs Band

The novel follows the adventures of a rock and blues band called Coyote Springs. This band is made up of Spokane Indian musicians from the Spokane Reservation. The story shows how the band starts, becomes popular, and then faces challenges.

Meeting a Legendary Musician

In 1995, three friends named Thomas Builds-The-Fire, Junior Polatkin, and Victor Joseph meet a famous American blues musician, Robert Johnson. These three characters have also appeared in Sherman Alexie's earlier short story collection, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. Robert Johnson is a legendary figure in music history. He is known for his amazing guitar skills and a mysterious story about his life.

Starting the Band

After meeting Robert Johnson, the three Spokane friends decide to form their own band. Thomas Builds-The-Fire becomes the bass player and lead singer. Junior Polatkin plays the drums, keeping the rhythm for the group. Victor Joseph gets to play Johnson's special guitar, which seems to have a magical touch.

New Members Join the Group

Later in their journey, two sisters join the band. Their names are Chess and Checkers Warm Water. They come from the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana. With these new members, Coyote Springs becomes a full band, ready to make music and share their stories. The novel explores their experiences as they try to make their mark in the world of music.
