History of Restauración
How the City Got Its Name
The city of Restauración began in 1882. At that time, some officers named Sotero Blanc, Pablo Reyes, and Eusebio Gómez helped to take back this land. They removed the Haitian military who were in the area. Then, they raised the Dominican flag, showing that the territory was now part of the Dominican Republic again.
About a year later, General Sotero Blanc suggested a new name for the place. He asked President Ulises Heureaux to call it "Cantonal Restoration Post." The word "Restoration" means bringing something back to its original state. This name was chosen because the land was "restored" to the Dominican Republic.
Becoming a Municipality
From that moment on, the new area was known by this name. It was part of the Monte Cristi province, which was an important capital at that time.
On June 23, 1892, President Ulises Heureaux signed a special order. This order made Restauración an official "Common" or municipality. This meant it had its own local government.
Restauración was also the very first municipality created in the Dajabón Province. This happened in 1938, thanks to a law passed on June 20 of that year.
