A Look Back: El Retiro's History
El Retiro has a special place in history because of a couple named Don Ignacio Castañeda and Doña Javiera Londoño. They settled here in 1734.
Freedom for Many: A Unique Story
Don Ignacio and Doña Javiera used enslaved people to work in mines around the area. However, Doña Javiera made a very important decision. On October 11, 1766, she signed a will. In this will, she and her husband agreed to free 140 enslaved people after her death. They also gave these newly freed people the most productive of the El Guarzo mines. This act of freeing enslaved people was called manumission. It was a rare and significant event for its time.
