Website Rhineland, Texas from the Handbook of Texas Online

Rhineland is a small community in Knox County, Texas, United States. It is called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. In the year 2000, about 100 people lived in Rhineland.

Where is Rhineland Located?

Rhineland is found in a part of Texas known as the Rolling Plains. It's about 1 mile south of the Brazos River. You can find it where two roads, Farm-to-Market 267 and 2534, meet in southeastern Knox County.

What's the Weather Like?

Rhineland has a semiarid climate. This means it's usually dry, but not quite a desert. It gets some rain, but not a lot.

A Look at Rhineland's Past

Rhineland officially started on February 1, 1895. This happened when some German-born Catholics, Father Joseph R. Reisdorff and Hugh Herchenbach, bought a large piece of land. They bought 12,000 acres to create a new home for German Catholics. They named the area "Rhineland" after a region in Germany.

The very first land was sold to John Bruckner. He bought about 160 acres for $8 an acre. He had many acres to choose from! His land was near the corner of FM 267 and CR 4260.

Early Schools in Rhineland

The Rhineland Common School District was set up in 1898. The first school building was built the next year. Later, in 1926, a bigger brick school was built. This school taught students all the way through high school. Some students also went to a local church school.

Population Changes Over Time

By 1950, about 75 people lived in Rhineland. The number of people living there grew a bit over the years. However, the number of businesses in the community went down. The school district in Rhineland later joined with the nearby town of Munday. In 1980, about 196 people lived in Rhineland. By 2000, that number had gone down to 100.

Learning in Rhineland

Students who live in Rhineland attend public schools. These schools are part of the Munday Consolidated Independent School District.
