The Rhodothemis lieftincki, often called the Red Arrow, is a type of dragonfly. It belongs to a family of dragonflies known as Libellulidae. These amazing insects are known for their bright colors and fast flight.

The Red Arrow dragonfly is a medium-sized insect. Its wings can spread out about 60 to 85 millimeters wide. Male Red Arrows are usually bright red. Female Red Arrows are a bit different. They are often a duller brown or orange color.

Where It Lives

The Red Arrow dragonfly is part of a group of dragonflies called Rhodothemis. You can find other dragonflies from this group in India, Southeast Asia, and Australia. The Rhodothemis lieftincki is special because it is the only type of Rhodothemis dragonfly found in Australia.

Australian Homes

In Australia, the Red Arrow lives in many different places. It likes areas near water, such as streams, rivers, lagoons, and ponds. You can find these dragonflies in a wide arc across northern Australia. This area stretches from a town called Geraldton in the west all the way to Sydney in the east.

Conservation Status

The Red Arrow dragonfly has been checked by a group called the IUCN Red List. This group looks at how many of a certain animal or plant are left in the world. For the Red Arrow, they decided it is of "least concern". This means there are still plenty of them around, and they are not currently in danger of disappearing.
