Riccardo Bacchelli (born April 19, 1891 – died October 8, 1985) was an important Italian writer. He wrote many novels, plays, and essays. He helped start a magazine called La Ronda. He also won the Bagutta Prize, a special award for writers. Bacchelli was even suggested eight times for the famous Nobel Prize in Literature!

Becoming a Writer: Bacchelli's Early Career

Riccardo Bacchelli was part of the team that ran the magazine La Ronda. This magazine was based in Rome and was active from 1919 to 1922. His very first novel was called Il filo meraviglioso di Lodovico Clo. This means The wonderful thread of Lodovico Clo.

Bacchelli's First Novels

After his first book, he wrote Lo sa il tonno in 1923. Other early works include Il Diavolo al Pontelungo (1927). He also wrote La città degli amanti in 1929. This title means The City of Lovers.

Later Works and Recognition

His most famous book is Il mulino del Po. This title means The Mill on the Po. It was published between 1938 and 1940. This long story tells about a family's life over 100 years. A movie based on this novel came out in 1949.

After 1945, Bacchelli wrote many more novels. Some of these include Il pianto del figlio di Lais and Non ti chiamerò più padre. He also wrote La cometa and Il rapporto segreto. The last one means The secret relationship. Other books were Afrodite: un romanzo d'amore (Aphrodite: a love novel). He also wrote Il progresso è un razzo (Progress is a rocket) and Il sommergibile (The submarine).

Riccardo Bacchelli was chosen to be a member of the Royal Academy of Italy. This was a great honor. In 1971, he received the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. This is a very high award in Italy.

The Mill on the Po: A Famous Story

Il mulino del Po is a very long novel. It has more than 2000 pages! It tells the story of Lazzaro Scacerni and his family. The book starts in the early 1800s. Lazzaro Scacerni comes back to Italy from Russia. He had been a soldier for Napoleon.

A Family's Journey Through History

The story follows Lazzaro and his family for a whole century. It ends around the time of the First World War. Lazzaro owns a mill on the Po River. This is why the book is called The Mill on the Po. He and his family live through many changes. They face political problems, wars, and hard economic times. They also deal with conflicts between different social classes.

Research and Writing Style

Bacchelli did a lot of research for this novel. He studied history, geography, and how people lived. This helped him create a detailed picture of life in rural Italy in the 1800s. His writing style in this book was like that of Alessandro Manzoni. Manzoni was another famous Italian writer. Bacchelli also used ideas from other European novels of his time.
