Rice in Laos
Rice is a main food for people in Laos. More than 60% of the land that can be farmed is used to grow rice. Laos has many mountains, so only about 4% of its land is good for farming. This is the smallest amount of farmable land in all of Southeast Asia.
Where Rice Grows
Most rice in Laos grows in the flat, low areas. Only about 11% of rice is grown in the mountains. Many of the best rice-growing places are along the Mekong River. These include areas like Vientiane, Khammouan, Bolikhamxai, Savannakhet, Salavan, and Champasak. Most rice farms are small, usually about 1 to 2 hectares (which is like 2 to 5 acres).
How Much Rice is Grown?
In 2019, Laos grew about 1.5 million metric tons of rice. The amount of rice grown can change each year. But it has been getting better! Farmers are using new types of rice that grow more. Also, more farms now have irrigation, which means they can water their crops.
Wet Season vs. Dry Season
Almost 90% of rice is grown during the wet season. This is because only about 12% of rice fields have irrigation. In the mountains, there is no irrigation. So, mountain farmers can only grow one crop of rice each year, from April to November.
However, some farmers in the lowlands near the Mekong River can grow rice twice a year. The main rice crop in the lowlands is usually planted in June and July. It is then harvested from October to December. The second crop, called the off-season crop, is planted in December and January. It is harvested in April and May.
Types of Rice Grown
About 80% of all rice grown in Laos is Glutinous rice. This is a sticky type of rice. The rest of the rice is mostly white rice and fragrant rice. Using machines for farming is still quite new in Laos. But it is becoming more common in the main rice-growing areas.
Government's Role in Rice
Rice is very important for farmers' money and for making sure people have food. So, the government watches the rice business closely. For example, they set minimum prices for farmers' rice. Also, if someone wants to sell rice to other countries, they must register with the government.
Future Plans for Rice
In 2020, the Lao government started making a new plan for farming. This was because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Before that, Laos had two tough years for farming due to bad weather and pests. This made the government think about new ways to help farmers.
The government decided to focus more on small farmers. They also wanted to invest more in research and helping farmers learn new methods. The government also put a lot of effort into green and sustainable farming. Their goal was to grow 5 million metric tons of rice by 2025. They also wanted to export 1 million metric tons of rice by then. To reach this goal, the government focused on increasing irrigated land and improving rice seeds.
