Richard A. Robinson, born on December 10, 1957, is an American lawyer and a respected judge. He was a member of the highest court in Connecticut, the Connecticut Supreme Court. He held a very important position as the Chief Justice of this court from 2018 to 2024. Before that, he was an Associate Justice from 2013 to 2018.

Richard Robinson's Early Life and Education
Richard Robinson was born in Stamford, Connecticut. He studied at the University of Connecticut, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979. Later, he went to the West Virginia University College of Law. He earned his law degree, called a Juris Doctor, in 1984.
Starting His Legal Career
After finishing law school, Robinson began working for the City of Stamford. From 1985 to 1988, he was a staff counsel, which means he was a lawyer for the city. After that, he became an assistant corporation counsel in Stamford.
Becoming a Judge
In 2000, Richard Robinson was appointed as a judge to the Connecticut Superior Court. This is a trial court where many legal cases begin. He served there for several years.
Moving to Higher Courts
On December 10, 2007, he was appointed to the Connecticut Appellate Court. This court reviews decisions made by the Superior Court. Then, on December 19, 2013, he was appointed to the Connecticut Supreme Court. This is the highest court in the state.
Serving as Chief Justice
In November 2017, the Chief Justice at the time, Chase T. Rogers, announced her retirement. The Governor of Connecticut, Dannel Malloy, first nominated Justice Andrew J. McDonald to be the next chief justice. However, this nomination was not approved by the Connecticut Senate.
A Historic Appointment
In April 2018, Governor Malloy nominated Richard Robinson to be the Chief Justice of Connecticut. Robinson was sworn into this important role on June 18, 2018. He made history as the first African-American chief justice in Connecticut's history. He led the state's highest court for several years.
Retirement from the Court
On May 21, 2024, Chief Justice Robinson announced his plan to retire. He officially retired from his active service on September 6, 2024.
